Panaji: The Dalgado Konknni Akademi (DKA) recently organized a significant literary event where it conferred the prestigious Bonaventure D’ Pietro Book Award on Fr. Roman Rodrigues for his acclaimed book, Dhage. The ceremony was followed by an insightful story writing workshop aimed at nurturing new literary talent.
Dhage, written by Fr. Roman—a renowned Konkani language expert and writer—is a thought-provoking collection of essays that explores the intricate web of relationships, love, and self-discovery. The book masterfully stitches together diverse human experiences, from family bonds to friendship, earning critical acclaim for its profound depth.
Dr. Prakash Parienkar, Associate Professor & Vice Dean (Research) at Goa University, graced the occasion as the chief guest and resource person. In his address, he lauded Catholic community students for their exceptional performance in MA exams at Goa University. “The history of Romi Konkani literature holds vast knowledge and wisdom that needs urgent research and preservation,” Dr. Parienkar stated. He guided aspiring writers on the art of storytelling, emphasizing that a writer must find a “spark” in real-life, heart-touching incidents and creatively transpose them into a vividly experienced narrative setup.
DKA President Fr. Myron Jeson Barreto, in his presidential address, paid homage to the great Romi Konkani writers of the past. He highlighted that the award, instituted in the name of the legendary writer Bonaventure D’ Pietro, serves as an inspiration to produce high-standard literature. “Though Romi Konkani did not receive recognition in the Official Language Act, its value and supremacy remain undiminished. We must fight for justice and work together to protect this rich heritage,” Fr. Barreto urged the gathering.
The event, which saw a strong turnout of Konkani promoters, teachers, and students, was welcomed by DKA Secretary Agnelo Borim. Vice-President Anthony San Fernandes proposed the vote of thanks, while Sonia Gomes compered the program, which concluded with the National Anthem. DKA Treasurer Willy Goes was also present at the event.
