Panjim, Goa: Despite the unpredictable future of Indian football, the passion for the sport remains deeply entrenched in Goa, according to Chennaiyin FC star and former national team player Mandar Rao Dessai.

Speaking at a sports kit distribution event in Arpora-Nagoa, the 33-year-old football veteran highlighted the stark contrast between his early days and the opportunities available for aspiring athletes today.

“When I started playing, there were challenges — lack of kits, infrastructure, and support. But today, everything is available,” Dessai stated.

However, he pointed out that this availability isn’t universal. The footballer emphasized the need for a collective effort to identify and support talented youngsters who may still lack financial means or proper guidance.

“We all should come together to motivate and guide young players so they can become great athletes,” he urged.

Dessai specifically highlighted the crucial role of the community in nurturing future champions. “Support from family and friends — whether moral or financial — is crucial,” he said. “I have represented my state and country, and I know there are many more talented players in Goa who just need the right training and guidance.”

He stressed that the process of building great athletes must begin at an early age, grounded in discipline and dedication.

The event was organized by the V.P. Arpora–Nagoa Panchayat. Dessai thanked the local officials for their initiative and called for continued efforts to develop sports infrastructure at the grassroots level.

“Football runs in the blood of every Goan,” Dessai said, expressing his hope that with the right support, the state will continue to produce outstanding athletes for the nation.
