Margao has emerged as a leader in sustainable religious practices thanks to the Nirmal Nirmalya campaign, a community-driven environmental initiative led by Yogiraj Digambar Kamat. The project successfully addresses the critical issue of ritual waste pollution by transforming floral offerings into nutrient-rich compost, effectively blending tradition with ecological responsibility.
Started to prevent tonnes of nirmalya (ritual offerings) from clogging and polluting local rivers during Ganesh Chaturthi, the initiative has seen remarkable growth. In 2024, the campaign converted 700 kg of waste into 150 kg of compost. Building on this success, the project expanded in 2025 to include year-round collections from partnering temples across Margao. During the holy month of Shravan alone, 800 kg of offerings were collected, followed by another 700 kg during Ganeshotsav.

The initiative’s success is rooted in strong community participation. Local temples have partnered wholeheartedly, while designated immersion spots were beautified and equipped with compost bins, drinking water, and first-aid facilities, enhancing the safety and experience for devotees.
By turning waste into a resource and beautifying sacred spaces, the Nirmal Nirmalya campaign has made Model Margao a replicable example of how urban centers can honor tradition while championing environmental stewardship.
