Capt. Eddie Viegas’ 60 years of maritime experience now in mother tongue; released by Goa Governor on 63rd National Maritime Day

Vasco, Goa : The Dalgado Konknni Akademi (DKA) added a glorious chapter to Romi Konkani literature with the release of ‘Nouchalok ani Tachi Kola’ (Notes on the Elements of Shipping), a pioneering book that brings maritime knowledge to Konkani readers.
The book was formally released by Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju, Governor of Goa, at Ravindra Bhavan, Vasco, during the 63rd National Maritime Day celebrations. The event was jointly organized with the National Maritime Day Celebration Committee, Goa.
Author Capt. Eddie Viegas, a veteran mariner from Loliem, Canacona, poured nearly six decades of shipping experience into this work. Trained on the Training Ship Dufferin (1965–67), he commanded ocean-going vessels with SCI and later served as a Marine Surveyor, Flag State Inspector, and Port Captain. He writes:

“It is with the idea of trying to fill the vacuum of knowledge… that this humble attempt is being made to write this book in our own Mother Tongue – KONKANI.”
Fr. Myron Jeson Barreto, DKA President, called the book “anchoring ourselves to our roots while sailing confidently towards the future.” He emphasized that writing in Roman Konkani preserves the soul of the language.
The book is aimed at students, aspiring seafarers, and inland vessel crews, explaining navigation and shipping elements in an accessible style. It is available for sale at Dalgado Konknni Akademi, Panjim, Goa.
